Tough Road to Success - Demaryius Thomas

As you all know, Demaryius Thomas was the first receiver picked the 2010 draft. This Denver Broncos rookie has the size and talent to upgrade the Broncos passing game. Maybe his strongest trait is his maturity and focus. In a recent article, we find out that Demaryius could have ended up like many outcasts in our society. His family life was initially full of drugs and strangers with crack pipes entering his house. Lindsay H. Jones, of the Denver Post, provides a peek behind the curtain, so to speak, of this young man's journey from Montrose, Georgia to soon becoming a Denver Bronco and playing in the NFL.

Broncos rookie receiver Demaryius Thomas has run a tough route to success

It is a deeply moving story about this young man's ability to overcome seeing his mother and grandmother sent to prison at the age of 12, finding stability with extended family, and growing up to be successful in life and football. Take the opportunity to read the complete article because it will (or may if you are manly man . . . LOL) a tear to your eye and warmth to your heart.

Regardless of you are rooting for in the AFC West, this story brings positive energy about a man, who just happens to be a football player. DT will be success in life . . . period. We Broncos fans just hope he can be a success in Denver for years to come!

  1. Here's my disclaimer: I really do like Demaryius Thomas. I think he's an exceptional athlete and one helluva human being.

BUT, I don't believe he's an NFL ready receiver. He has a great work ethic and phenomenal athletic ability, but he's very inexperienced, even for a rookie.

It's not his fault; GT was such a run-oriented team that opponents often stacked 9 in the box against them. This pretty much eliminated any chance of Thomas being double-teamed. He also has very limited experience when it comes to route-running and pro-style formations. And he has yet to show the ability to out-play a premier shutdown corner.

He could have a great future in the league, but I'm worried that too much is going to be asked of him too early. Learning from Rod Smith will definitely be a plus, but I don't know that there is anybody on the field that can really show him at full speed, the things he'll need to learn to be a successful WR in the NFL.

  2. having rod in his ear will help and if thomas can develop thick skin as he will be called on early to perform . citadel i beleive you give an acurate assesment and if thomas can take his eary lumps i see a at least productive wr coming out the other side ! if he catches 30 and scores 4 that will be a big step in his rookie year !

  3. I think that if DT does not try to become great overnight, he will be successful in the NFL. His Georgia Tech background ensures he will block in running formations and it is easier to teach routes than blocking in my opinion. It will also open short screens to the wide receivers and that is where I think DT will make teams pay dearly.

The fact that he has dealt with issues that few can understand much less deal with will work to his advantage. He has the patience and desire to improve that will be something that might make him one of the best in the league.

I believe that having Ed McCaffrey will greatly help Demaryius in his development. I am not familiar with Jerry Rice's college experience (regarding formations and routes he ran prior to the NFL) but I see DT as one who could become something very special indeed.

Thanks for your insights, citadelchief05, and we will just to wait and see how everything turns out!!!
