Elvis Dumervil suffered a torn pectoral muscle during a Wednesday evening practice and will be out about four months. This will greatly impact Denver's defensive scheme. Dumervil had a league leading 17 sacks in 2009. The initial reports have him returning in four months.
Your heart and soul of the defense is out possibly for the year. Do you save a roster spot for him or do you put him on the injured reserves and end his season? This is one tough decision for the Denver organization to made, that is for sure. With all of the previous injuries to the team, this one truly hits at a bad time.
What do you all think?
They need a quick diagnosis and a quick decision. If they put him on the PUP list, they retain the rights to him and can add a player to the roster (Aaron Schobel?). But, that means Dumervil can't come back this season even if he recovers. The other option is to keep him on the roster and let him recover on IR. But there you are playing most (if not all) of the season a man down.
ReplyDeleteI would begin contacting Schobel (or maybe even Adalius Thomas) and start talking about a potential contract. Schobel will be a hot commodity out there right now (KC and SD could also take a look at him along with various other teams around the league) so Denver has to act FAST.
When's the latest they can put him on the PUP list? If they start out nice and have playoff hopes then just leave him at IR. Maybe Ayers and Moss do a decent enough job, but I dont see that happening though.
ReplyDeleteIt has to be before the season starts. That's the whole difference between PUP and IR. Big decision time for McDaniels.
ReplyDeleteIf that's the case then they should definitely put him in PUP. Have him at the healthiest for that 5 year extension he just signed. The younger guys needs the experience anyways so when they are lined up next to doom next year they can keep up. Not many options out there though so might as well keep the position open for competition in house.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Jeffree! It is not just about this year but the next five years. You have just signed him to the contract and you already know what he can bring to your team. I would look at Adalius Thomas since his experience in New England, familiarity with McDaniels, and his experience in the 3-4 defense would serve Denver well.
ReplyDeleteBut Adalius Thomas is a shell of his former self from Baltimore that's part of the reason why he wasn't retained in New England. Also, he really isn't a great pass rusher... he's better in pursuit and run support. He wouldn't be a solution in Denver. As for Schobel, he wanted out of Buffalo because they are transitioning to a 3-4. Schobel is comfortable in a 4-3 and has voiced that he prefers to be with a team that runs a 4-3... again, not a good fit in Denver. I think McDaniels has to roll the dice with Ayers or Moss and see what he has.
ReplyDeletetough break ! hope ayers or moss can step up cause thats seems the best route as nothing in fa is going to work or fit !
